How to use Savy
Savy downloads on your own computer through a small app called Savy Helper. Set it up once, then paste links as often as you like.
First time only: set up Savy Helper
Savy Helper works on Windows 10 and 11. It can't run on a phone or tablet.
- Download Savy Helper (about 110 MB, a zip file).
- Unzip it and keep the folder somewhere permanent, for example
C:\Savy Helper. Don't run it from inside the zip. - Open Savy Helper.exe. If Windows says “Windows protected your PC”, the app is just new and not code-signed: click More info, then Run anyway. Nothing opens except a small page confirming it's running.
- Come back to Savy. The install card disappears and a small “Savy Helper connected” line shows under the link box. If your browser asks to allow access to apps or devices on your network, choose Allow.
Every time you download
- Make sure Savy Helper is running. You'll see “Savy Helper connected” under the link box. If you see the install card instead, open Savy Helper.exe and wait a few seconds.
- Copy a video link from YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or another site. Paste it in the box (or press Ctrl+V anywhere on the page) and press Fetch.
- Choose Video and a quality, or Audio as MP3, M4A, OPUS or WAV. You can rename the file, trim it, or take the thumbnail or subtitles.
- Press the big Download button and wait for it to finish.
- When it says Ready to save, click Save file. The file goes to your browser's normal Downloads folder.
Pasting several links, or a playlist, gives you a list: tick what you want and download it all, including as one zip.
Controlling Savy Helper
Open Savy Helper.exe again (or go to http://127.0.0.1:47653/) for its control page:
- Start with Windows runs it quietly whenever you sign in, so you never have to open it by hand.
- Quit Savy Helper stops it. The site then shows the install card until you start it again.
Opening it twice never starts a second copy.
Good to know
- While a download is being made, the file sits in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\SavyHelper\tmpand is deleted after an hour. Your saved copy in Downloads is yours to keep. Quitting the helper mid-download cancels it. - The download engine (yt-dlp) updates itself. If a new Savy Helper is released, the site shows an Update link.
- Private, members-only, DRM-protected and some age-restricted videos usually can't be downloaded.
If something goes wrong
Windows blocking the app, the site not finding Savy Helper, a failed download? Fix common problems. The quick ones:
- “Platform is checking us” or “verify you're not a bot”: the site, often YouTube, is blocking your connection for now. Wait a few minutes and try again.
- The install card stays after you opened Savy Helper: press Check again, make sure you chose Allow on the browser prompt, and try a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R).
- A link isn't recognised: make sure it's the page address of one video, then check the supported sites on the home page.
